Breweries & Brewpubs
Halifax is home to the oldest working brewery in North America, plus a couple
of brewpubs for you to enjoy local home-brewed beers.
Alexander Keith's Nova Scotia brewery was established in 1820 and reopened in
2000 and is the cornerstone of Brewery Square (1496 Lower Water Street / 902-455-1474). Come in for a guided tour of the restored
brewery and you'll be entertained and educated by the costumed guides.
Summertime tours every half hour Monday-Saturday from 10am to 9pm; and Sundays
10am - 5pm. Wintertime tours every half hour Friday 5-8 pm; Saturday 12-8pm;
and Monday to Thursday: by appointment only.
Halifax is also home to the Granite Brewery, a local brew pub at
1222 Barrington St. (423-5660) and 1662 Barrington St. (422-4954) with a third
location in Toronto Rogue's Roost Brew Pub & Eatery
(5435 Spring Garden Rd., Halifax / 902 492-2337) also offers a visible brewery within the
barm with tours available.
Dartmouth is home to the Maritime Beer Company (#202, 111 Ilsley Avenue /
902-468-3135) which has an annual capacity of 68000 barrels. John Shippey's Brewing Company
is a brewpub in the Harbourside Market, with 5 house brews and 2-3 revolving specials
