Located on the shores of gorgeous Bedford Basin, this community is very pretty, with its access to summertime sailing on the Bedford Basin. Bedford, ranked by Chatelaine magazine rated Bedford as one of the Top Ten Places to live in Canada, is home to 14,000 primarily middle class professional people. Bedford was the location of Fort Sackville in 1749, and had a Nova Scotia Railway station and post office open in 1856 using the name Bedford. The Basin was named for John Russell, the 4th Duke of Bedford (1710-1771), who was the secretary of state when Halifax was founded in 1749, and later became first lord of the Admiralty.
Bedford has 3 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and a high school, as well as the Bedford Academy private school, and a French-language school nearby in Halifax. Dewolfe Park, home to many community occassions, provides a 1 mile walking path along the shores and has a large grassy area for play or picnics. This park hosts the week-long Bedford Days summer festival. Lions Park, also on the shores of the Bedford Basin, has two heated swimming pools, a playground and a basketball court, and has a breathtaking view of the sailboats in the Bedford Yacht Club.
