Halifax History - Native Indians

Indians settled around the many lakes in the area The earliest evidence of human habitation dates back 10,500 years around Debert near the Minas Basin. The Mi'kmaq (often anglicized as "Micmac") called the area Chebuctook, or "Great Long Harbour." It is believed that Vikings have visited the area around 1000 AD, as evidenced by a stone with Nordic runes near Cape Forchu.
