Nova Scotia was originally settled by the French Acadians, who were relocated to what is now the State of Louisiana after the British victory at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham and the Treaty of Utrecht. Since then Nova Scotia has been a prime area for colonists from England, then Scotland and finally United Empire Loyalists from the United States, following its War of Independence.

Halifax is the seat of the provincial government of Nova Scotia, and is also a major East Coast locale for many federal government departments and agencies. Probably most importantly, it is the base for Maritime Command of the Canadian Armed Forces. Recently the various municipalities around Halifax and Dartmouth merged into a single Regional Municipality.
