Lower and Upper Water streets and Barrington are along the waterfront. From
them, short streets climb the steep hills, up toward the Citadel and the Grand
Parade which provide significant green space just west of the downtown. The
city's universities are all congregated just south of downtown.Roads Drivers in Halifax are generally cautious, whether they are on the steep hill-side streets, or watching for drivers coming down them. Many of the roads in the downtown are one-way, requiring you to plan your trip beforehand. Rush Hour The roadways are most congested mornings from 7:30 to 9 am and afternoons 4 - 5:30 pm. The area around the Universities are crowded anytime on weeekdays. Bridges
There are two toll bridges in Halifax/Dartmouth, the A. Murray MacKay Bridge and the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge. Toll required for a single crossing (one direction) is 75¢ or a token. The Macdonald bridge connects downtown Dartmouth to downtown Halifax and is the only bridge with pedestrian and bicycle access. Pedways The city has a number of above-ground walkways between many downtown buildings, malls and hotels. This is very convenient (not to mention more comfortable) during the winter or during a rainstorm.
