This town is located at the mouth of the French and Waugh Rivers, and is the Indian word for "meeting of the waters".
The original French settlement here was destroyed by the British in 1755 on their way to sack Louisbourg.
French Hugenot Col Joseph Fredirick Walsh Desbarres was given a land grant in the area, though his settlement
didn't survive, but his offspring have remained in the region. One notable resident was Anna Swan,
born here in 1846, who went on to grow 240 centimetres (8 ft) and joining P.T. Barnum's
"Greatest Show on Earth" circus for years. There is a life-size statue of her in the town at the Fraser Culture Centre.

This is the oldest operational grist mill in Nova Scotia, built in 1874 on Matheson's Brook.
Discover this wonderful three-storey grist mill tucked away in a wooded gorge where wheat, oats,
and buckwheat are ground and sifted just as they have been since. Alexander McKay opened the mill.
Feel the mill in action and hear the whir of wooden gear as shafts and pulleys turn the mill's Scottish
granite millstones. Sample the nutty flavour of oats toasted and turned on the cast-iron floor
of the kiln, heated by the maple fire. Open June 1 to October 15 Mon-Sat 9:30 - 5:30, Sun 1 - 5:50. Admission by donation.

Promotes arts, crafts and cultural activities in the North Shore area and helps preserve and
present this area's heritage. The building, operated by: Northumberland Arts Council, contains
the Town Office, the 1889 Gallery: an exhibition of local curios (co-sponsored by the Sunrise Trail Museum),
the North Shore Archives Society: an exhibit on Nova Scotian giantess Anna Swan handicrafts displays.

Fraser Mills Fish Hatchery

Over a million Brook, Brown and Rainbow trout and landlocked salmon are raised here annually
to stock the province's lakes and 36 ponds. At the visitor centre, learn about the hatchery and

Sutherland Steam Mill Museum

When Alexander Sutherland built his sawmill in Denmark, N.S., in 1894, steam was replacing
water as the most efficient way to cut logs. After the sleighs, carriages and sleds the company
manufactured during its early years lost popularity, the mill turned out much-needed lumber for
England during World War II as well as materials for local houses. The recently restored mill's
importance to and influence on the community is still evident in the fancy gingerbread trim on
many local houses. Open June 1-Oct. 15, Mon.-Sat., 9:30 am-5:30 pm, Sun., 1-5:30 pm. Admission adults $3
Tatamagouche Fossil Trackway Centre
Highlights fossils from one of the most important trackway sites in the world. Hundreds of
footprints of amphibians and reptiles older than the dinosaurs. See conifers and tracks preserved
from 290 million years ago and reconstructions of the animals that made the tracks. Adission: Charged. Open: June-Sept
