Nearby: Tatamagouche

Balmoral Mills, in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia This town is located at the mouth of the French and Waugh Rivers, and is the Indian word for "meeting of the waters". The original French settlement here was destroyed by the British in 1755 on their way to sack Louisbourg. French Hugenot Col Joseph Fredirick Walsh Desbarres was given a land grant in the area, though his settlement didn't survive, but his offspring have remained in the region. One notable resident was Anna Swan, born here in 1846, who went on to grow 240 centimetres (8 ft) and joining P.T. Barnum's "Greatest Show on Earth" circus for years. There is a life-size statue of her in the town at the Fraser Culture Centre.
